Valle Pozzo

The main branch of Valle Pozzo goes down steep to the sea of Positano in a continuous sequence of waterfalls enclosed in a gorge.
Unfortunately the valley has been heavily modified by dams, water takings and pipelines. The only section that retains its natural look is the upper canyon, that features a modest but probably perennial flow-rate and cascades of low or medium height.

I remember ...

The unique charm of the Amalfi Coast lies in the incredible coexistence between Man and a very harsh environment. In these places made of rock, with very little arable land, divided by huge walls that bar the step in any direction you want to go, right here Man has settled creating a dense network of villages linked by paths that use ledges and hidden passages, terracing, creating gardens overlooking the ravines. The visitor finds himself in front of the paradox of a dolomite mountain inhabited as if it were a district of the city, but with only a few streets that were carved into the rock only in recent times with the help of dynamite. Traffic is intense and it's very difficult finding a place where it is physically possible to park a car.

So that unique charm ends into a defect: here there is too much Man, and he heavily altered the environment, and he goes on altering. In the hardest and wildest valleys you can find sewer and trash or dams and water takings. Some streams have been enclosed into tunnels to obtain more space for buildings and many dams have been built to diminish the destructive power of floods.

As soon as we realized how heavy it was the alteration of Valle Pozzo environment we decided it was not worth it to continue the exploration, which was so limited to the upper part of the canyon, the wildest, stopping at the first water taking.
