I remember ...

Streams are a bit like roads that cross a territory, roads created by the force of water, which by digging tends to uniform slope by reducing rock steps' height, roads paved with stones and gravel. Maintenance of these "roads" is done by floods, which clean the stream by tearing away the vegetation that tries to conquer the riverbed.
In streams where floods are rare, vegetation gradually takes over the riverbed. This was evident while retracing the Fosso Piatello downstream from the confluence with the Ortali, 2 years after the first exploration: there was much more vegetation!
