Vallone Malonome

Most creeks of Sila Range flow for kilometers in narrow valleys between steep and often landsliding slopes, with the bottom filled by enormous quantities of gravel which make the slope uniform and further downstream turn the valleys into the typical Fiumare of Calabria.
This type of streams offer the hiker tiring and non-trivial itineraries through isolated and wild environments. For the canyoneer, however, these are monotonous routes, too easy and too tiring at the same time, except in the sections where the torrent intersects banks of compact rock and digs gorges and waterfalls.

Vallone Malonome is almost the canon of the Sila Greca torrent: a long hike interrupted by sometimes non-trivial downclimbings and some rare falls in a beautiful environment.
In its initial part, however, the Malonome passes through an area of compact limestone where it dug a graceful sequence of waterfalls and pools, which make this part interesting for canyoning.

I remember ...

It was the shepherd we met at Vallone Occhio di Bue who told me and Saverio of the two main waterfalls of Vallone Malonome. In the following days I returned to Rome and Saverio dedicated himself to finding the approach routes and to exploring the Malonome and Otturi.
