canyon exploring with Michele Angileri

Torrente Ervavulo

Situated in the middle course of torrente Uria, the famous Cascata dell'Inferno (Hell's Waterfall) is among the most beautiful I have ever seen. Its powerful jet jumps down 25 meters into a tight canyon dug in gneiss by the force of water. All the scenery has something unreal that cannot be fixed in a photograph or shown in a movie.

In this part of Calabria people gave different names to the parts of the same torrent. So the upper part of torrente Uria is named Torrente Campanaro and the medium part (the one with the Cascata dell'Inferno) is called Torrente Ervavulo. Upstream the Hell's Waterfall, stream Ervavulo flows through beautiful easy narrows known as Hell's Gorge.

The trail I propose in this webpage developes through Hell's Gorge and terminates at the bottom of Cascata dell'Inferno.

I remember ...

I had seen many photos and movie clips of the Hell's Waterfall on the web. Waterfalls and canyon pictures or movie clips may say nothing to the viewer unless he has a good familiarity with real cascades and canyons, but I have. So the Cascata dell'Inferno would have not surprised me at all, that's what I thought ... Not so high, not so dark, not too much water ...

When I looked out from cascade's edge I realized that particular reality exceeded my experience and imagination. That place had a stunning, amazing feeling, and it cannot be expressed by words or photographs or movie clips ... Must go there and try by yourself.
