canyon exploring with Michele Angileri

Valle Fontillo

Year after year the hills around Cineto Romano abandoned by farmers and shepherds become increasingly wild. The few roads go ruined, and the ancient paths are erased by vegetation.
In this nontrivial environment there are the numerous cascades of Valle Fontillo, in the bottom of a gorge whose walls are low and discontinuous (giving many escape possibilities) surrounded by woods. Although the source of Valle Fontillo is taken by an aqueduct, the creek has some flow even in the driest years (like terrible 2017), enough to keep the pools clean and full.

The environment, the length, the rather long and nontrivial approach and return hikes make Valle Fontillo a canyoning route not to be underestimated.

I remember ...

It was a time when I enjoyed the freedom that comes from doing a challenging but flexible job. I concentrated my commitments and organized the things to do so that the free day coincided with the right weather for a canyon exploration. Then I left, alone, to lose myself in some wild and unknown corner of Central Italy, geographically close to home, but sociologically and psychologically far-away, far beyond what people can only imagine.
