Gole del Farfa

Natural monument of Gole del Farfa is among the most beautiful and interesting natural places in Lazio.
The springs of river Farfa are heavily taken: 5 m3/s are given away to Peschiera aqueduct. But it's this large subtraction of water that allows canyoneers to go through the tight narrows of Farfa. In winter or spring, when flow-rate is large as it would be in summer if there was no taking, you find many dangerous whirls and rapids, and it can be really hard (or even impossible) to pass through.

I remember ...

I heard of Gole del Farfa from Stefano Fassone, a hydrospeed enthusiast. It was winter 1995.
In a sunday of may 1995 I came there with my friends Tullio and Mauro. What a beautiful place! but stream pushed really strong, so we had to be really careful. We arrived at a point where it wasn't clear the way to pass without losing our lives!
To continue or to escape? Rope? plunge? but while we were busy thinking how to pass ... Stefano appeared! He didn't knew we were there, it was simply a chance. A lucky chance for us, because Stefano (who knew the canyon very well) guided us through all the most dangerous points.

That day I understood that Stefano was really in love with Farfa. I met Stefano almost all the times I came again to Farfa canyon. He decided to live there, in a farm aside the river. He also began offering farm holidays. Here is the website.

Photographs in this website show ultralight ropes (6 mm ropes made of high tenacity fibers). Read multimedia book Ultralight ropes canyoning technique to learn how to use them.
