canyon exploring with Michele Angileri

Canale di Campolungo

A few kilometers befor getting into Tirreno Sea, river Lao receives the clear waters of Argentino creek, the richest among Lao tributaries. The valley of Argentino is one of the jewels of Pollino National Park, maybe the wildest area in Calabrian mountains, featuring lush dense forests and tall rock peaks and walls

Canale di Campolungo flows amidst the houses of the beautiful village of Orsomarso. By looking from the village at the upper valley of Campolungo you see a majestic scenery of peaks, rocks, walls surrounded by forests. In the middle opens Campolungo canyon.
By going through it you find a place much sweeter than you imagined when you looked at it from afar. However there are some nice cascades to be rappelled, and a spectacular chaos of giant boulders embedded one another to make a kind of underground cavern.

I remember ...

Renato uses to spend last week of august in Calabria, since a couple of years. Unfortunately this time he is not well. So he said to me: Michele, let's do something easy, not tiring, light backpacks, short trails, ... I try to meet his wishes, but it's not easy in canyon exploring ...

Photographs in this website show ultralight ropes (6 mm ropes made of high tenacity fibers). Read multimedia book Ultralight ropes canyoning technique to learn how to use them.
