I remember ...

The name Fosso dello Stramazzo means "the gorge where you collapse to the ground". The Fosso is located at a point where gas and carbonated mineral water emerge from the depths. Among the gases is hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic gas typical of volcanic emissions. Being heavier than air, it tends to accumulate in low, enclosed, and poorly ventilated areas, such as a gorge.
So going down the Fosso on a calm day carries the risk of poisoning. Hydrogen sulfide is absorbed through the skin (as well as, obviously, the lungs), and even small amounts can cause paralysis of the respiratory centers. This can cause permanent damage, or even death.
But hydrogen sulfide is also toxic to vegetation. Near hydrogen sulfide sources, vegetation should appear sick, and only the most resistant plant species should be present. But at Stramazzo vegetation is lush and wonderful: evidently, the gas emissions are not so abundant and/or the site is well-ventilated.

However, be careful! Nature is wonderful but also dangerous.
