I remember ...

The water that falls on Simbruini Mountains ends up underground, in enormous karst networks that are still largely unexplored. The few surface streams see water only when the snow melts or in cases of exceptional rainfall.
The branches stuck a few meters above the ground, however, indicate that floods in Fosso San Mauro can be large and violent.
