Forra di Monte Marte (Fosso della Contea)

On the hills between Todi and Orvieto you find the most authentic and charming Umbria, made of little castles and medieval villages in the countryside, surrounded by mediterranean woods and bushes. Landscape is sweet, open, quiet.
Most hills are made of sandstone, but in a few places there's limestone too, and here streams dug canyons of pure beauty, known to canyoneers from all Europe: Prodo and Fosso del Bagno.

Another extraordinary canyon opens in the red marl-limestone of the cliff of Monte Marte. It is a tight and dark meander, scary though easy to be covered.

I remember ...

That tight, deep dark corridor was a big surprise for us. We didn't expect such a scary canyon amidst the sweet hills of Todi.
When we reached the point where the walls join we feared stream was going underground: a siphon might have stopped us in a trap.
A bit forward narrows enlarged, then canyon ended. We felt relief (no more danger from that point on) but we felt also regret for the end of such an unusual majestic beauty ...
