The forests that cover the sides of Valserra hide the unexpected canyon of Fosso di Acquapalombo. Fossil in the first half but still well carved in white limestone, the canyon becomes active in its second half, which develops in pink scaglia.

I remember ...

When a canyon becomes fossil, once there is no more regular flow nor floods, debris starts to accumulate on bottom. The gorge is gradually filled with debris, which lowers cascades' height till it makes them completely disappear. In the end the canyon becomes a steep slope.

In the fossil part of Fosso di Acquapalombo this process has come to half: some cascades have been covered by debris while others survive. So you have to do rappels even in the fossil part of Acquapalombo gorge.
